What to expect

Your first consultation is often a longer meeting and can take up to half an hour on most occasions. Your medical history, issues and previous operations are discussed. These other issues can have an important influence on your current problem and how it is managed. Obviously, the focus will be on the problem you have been referred for, but your background health issues are sometimes very important.

A physical examination will also be performed at this visit with a focus on the relevant problem area and any other body system that could influence the treatment of your current problem.

Once your assessment is complete, you will then be advised of the next step in your treatment. Sometimes further tests such as blood tests, x-rays or scans are required. In other cases, you will be recommended an operation/procedure and, on some occasions, other treatment such as antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medication may be a better option than surgery depending on circumstances.

If an operation/procedure is recommended, a good proportion of this visit goes into a discussion about the surgery itself, what are the benefits and what are the risks. At this time, it is also explained what to expect before and after the surgery.

There may be some out of pocket costs associated with pathology, assistant fees and anaesthetic services. In addition, private health funds may require patients to pay an excess to the hospital depending on their level of cover.

Private health funds can provide more information on excess fees for hospital admissions.
